Stornoway Town Centre continues to be developed with the pedestrian in mind. This means a visitor can safely explore the shops and visitor attractions. There are many seated areas where you can sit and eat your lunch. Pictured left (click to enlarge) is a photo of Stornoway Town Hall, which often has exhibitions that are well worth a visit. Around the Town Hall has a little "green" park/garden area with benches and is used frequently as a meeting place for youngsters but is equally used by older folk to sit and take in the day. Around Stornoway you will often stumble upon scultures (see below).
Wandering around Stornoway town centre is easy on the feet as the town itself is rather small. However you will find may shops that cater well for the tourist. There are several places to buy books, postcards and the usual gifts, together with your usual Woolworths and other high street shops. The photo to the right (click to enlarge) shows clearly that, if you are lucky, you will find the town centre not too crowded to enjoy your day..
As mentioned above, as you travel around the town you will soon discover some of the many sculptures depicting the hebridean way of life. The photo to the left (click to enlarge) shows one of the sculptures to be found opposite the Co-Op Superstore. The sculpture, rather modernistically consists of a Stornoway registed small fishing boat perched upon a rock - a nightmare for any fisherman. Sat up at the very front of the boat is a very robotic looking gentleman who appears to be waving to passers by.
